So I made resolution about [info]spn_j2_bigbang.  I would read the kind of stories I like--with plots, gen and het and OMC slash, and J-squared AUs  that are not about two actors on SPN.  And did I mention plot?  I only read the good ones--I stop pretty quickly if they don't start to take me somewhere pretty quickly.  I almost always skip the sex scenes, so I bail on stories that spend too many words on  the hot and heavy.

I didn't figure there'd be that much left to interest me, really. So I thought the second part of my resolution--to read them in order as they came on the community side--would not be a problem.  But it turns out that there are tons of wonderful stories and I have fallen behind, and some of the authors I really love have been popping up and I haven't had a chance to read them yet.  But I will.  I will catch up, honest.  (No, I won't.  They land on the comm faster than I can read them, but I will catch up to this week's by next week!)

So far, the one that comes to mind after settling in a while in my head is The Accompanist.   The story suffers from a lack of female characters, which is common in SPN but you'd think a writer that good would consider the other 50% of the universe.  But, author made me cry like a fool and not in the obvious places.

Interesting. And here I thought that the big bang was only for Dean/Sam and J2 fics. I didn't know it was for other genres. I'll definitely check out the story you recced. I'd like to see what the author can do with an OMC and Dean.

Something you said intrigues me: And did I mention plot? I only read the good ones--I stop pretty quickly if they don't start to take me somewhere pretty quickly

What do you mean by pretty quickly? Can you work out where the plot is going in your head by the first chapter or so? Do you abandon a fic if you're not "drawn in" right away? I'd like to get your take on this.

I've been pondering some Dean/Castiel, but I want to make it as UST and canon-y as possible, with plenty of looks and wants and desires...but coming up with plot is my weakness. I can just put two characters together and write them talking, but they need to *do* something in order to get people to read it. How do you tackle plotting?

The Accompanist is the only Dean/OMC story I've read so far. The relationship works in service to the story, which is really about something else entirely. A lot of the J2 AU is just casting, not about the real people at all--sort of like the old days, when people wrote about Led Zep as a band of vampires.

I'm going to move your other question up to a new post where I can edit better.

I am also fond of canony fic, and UST. Plot is not really all that hard. it's a problem that you set for the characters to solve that reveals the characters in the solving. It can be a mystery, or a relationship, or a task to complete, or a hardship to endure. plot, I think, is about characters being tested against a stressor, external is easier, internal can be really interesting. Once you set up the obstacle you set your characters loose and give them their struggle.
