We started talking about religion and Winchesters again, so I thought I'd bring this entry forward, just in case people were interested.
People are still talking about Religion and the Winchesters., and what religion-universe they may live in, so I decided to add another two cents One of the things I find interesting about the Winchesters and religion is that, while they use pre-Vatican II Catholic stuff a lot, they are clearly not Catholics. and don't live in a Catholic universe.
All their Catholic stuff is from books. They use rituals like recipes, which is workable (though faith is supposed to protect you, so they are working without a net there), but they don't seem to connect their actions to a living religious experience that includes the beliefs that underly the logic of those rituals. And they don't seem to have any cognizance of anything that has happened in the Church since 1962, when much of the high ritual and mysticism disappeared from common practice. A lot of the really dark stuff went away after that. In their 'verse, there is no mixing or clashing of the public rational Church and the private non-rational and darker Church they draw on, which you would see if they had experienced both.
So, whatever they are, or were as tykes, it wasn't Catholic.

I have been reading many theories about the role of ritual and belief in in the show SPN on LJ lately, and I thought I would

New ep, playthings. Liked the scary bits. I actually liked that it got away from all-mytharc-all-the-time, though there were a few moments discussed

Dear Red and Seerargent
Best Shirt Ever
Salt lines!
I am stressing about the whole moving thing--you'd think I was moving across the country and not up five floors and across the hall, which manifests itself as coming home from work and lying around in a completely alien state of lethargy. But the shirt really cheered me up. Oh, John!
Will write tomorrow.
BTW--shouldn't Dean have a scar on his forehead from that wound after the car crash, which he had even after he woke up from the dead, sort of. Not a huge and nasty one, but a reminder? I had one of those lost moments at work today when I thought that he ought to have one, just a thin mark to symbolically externalize the inner fractures. And there was the whole big nasty wound thing from having a semi park next to him in the back seat of the Impala, which would make it not entirely symbolic. Of course, those things are tough on the makeup and continuity people, and it would confuse future employers, who might not hire him because they think he really has a scar, but I don't think it would have hurt the cute factor if it was artfully done.
And, it was a big honking gash in his head. shoulda scarred, I'd think.

Talked to Sheila, and Vaznetti, you were right-she wants me to take a little more time getting Evan into his difficulties in the prologue. Which I did short change a bit, worried about page count. But she says, add pages. We want to know. So, a bit more. Watched the killer clown ep on SPN last night, which is kick-ass in all ways, actually. Lots of brother angst, and does it get any better than killer clowns? I even love the contrast of the goofy MOW and the heartbreaking grief stuff. I think I liked it more the second time around. ( but )Poor John.
